The Common hawk-cuckoo / Papiya

It had been a while since I came across a new bird. After a leisurely brunch on a Sunday, and thereafter while everyone went for a nap, I sat in my room working on my project. Just then, I heard an unusual bird call. I went out to see the bird and there it was right in front of me, perched on the nearest tree.  The bird 'Papiya' is often mentioned in Indian cinema songs and poems. I was well aware of the bird but had never seen it. When I searched on google, I found out that the common hawk was known as "papaya' in Hindi.  The common hawk is light brownish and white. Greater Coucal again!

It's a very beautiful autumn afternoon. I was dozing in my room. Just as I woke up, a bird flew past my window. It was an unfamiliar black and orange bird. On seeing this queer sight, I rushed to see it, hoping that it hadn't flown away. There it sat right below my window! It was a big beautiful black bird with coppery brown wings.  It was the same bird that I had seen few days back. A crow pheasant! Just a better camera angle this time. On closer look.

Jungle Babbler!

The Jungle babbler lives in flocks of seven to ten or more, and for that reason they are often called 'Sath Bhai' in Hindi. It's a noisy bird, and the presence of a flock may generally be known at some distance by the harsh mewing calls, continual chattering, squeaking and chirping produced by its members. The Jungle Babblers are gregarious and very social.  They feed mainly on insects, but also eat grains, nectar and berries.    For their size, they are long lived and have been noted to live as long as 16.5 years in captivity.  Birds fledge and females tend to leave their natal group after about two years.  Birds within a group often indulge in  allopreening , play chases and mock fights.  When threatened by predators, they have been said to sometimes  feign death .  Here is a short film on jungle babblers I shot sometime back :- ).  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRVxAGaDkHs
